Even today, I'm amazed by the number of people who buy themselves something with their hard earned money and then don't take even the most basic care of it. As found, this little Dell Dimension 2350 computer didn't even start up. Hand washing the motherboard brought it back to life, which kind of came as a shock. And for those wondering what's new about this video: I shot it with a different camera. I picked up a refurbished Canon FS200 camcorder since it is one of the few modern choices with an external microphone input, something I could see myself using. Unfortunately, it falls far short of being a great camera for a few reasons, some of which are deal-breakers: 1. 16:9 recording doesn't work properly. I couldn't tell you why, and it seemed like the VLC player did get it right. Everything else "squishes" it, although not quite to what would seem to be 4:3 video. No matter who is to blame, this is the kind of thing that should Just Work. I've never seen another camera get this wrong. I may call Canon and ask about it. I don't think the Youtube video resizing tags will work for me, unless by some chance Youtube is smart enough to ignore the white space that appears to one side or another of the video after it has been edited in iMovie 06. To be fair, there is software for Windows that can address this issue. 2. The FS200 shoots MPEG-2 video, which is kind of a non-starter for editing. digital video camcorder with audio ascribe mic jack
using the Canon FS200 camcorder, comparing the audio of the built-in mic and a lapel mic connected into the audio input - video is encoded in low-res (320x240) since this is just an audio test.. actual video does record in 720x480 with up to 37X optical zoom - the other known camcorder with audio input is the Kodak Zi8 pocket camcorder, which is a smaller form factor that records in 1080p HD but only 4X digital zoom and NO optical zoom -- which would you rather have?
